common accommodations

Below is a list of some of the more common accommodations that instructors will encounter, a definition of each accommodation and the steps the instructor will need to take in order to fulfill the accommodation. If you have questions, contact SSD.

Class accommodations

Assistive Listening device used by the student; instructors need to wear the lapel microphone located in the classroom

The student will be bringing a listening device to class. During all class instruction, the professor needs to wear the lapel microphone that is provided in the class so the student can access the audio stream.

The student may experience an exacerbation of their disability and need to leave the classroom for a short period of time

The student may need to leave class to address disability related symptoms. They are expected to return to class once their symptoms have been managed.

Adjustable height desk required for student

Email ssd@binghamton.edu if you need a desk installed in your classroom to accommodate this need.

Separate desk and chair for student

The student will require seating with a chair that is not attached to a desk or table. If this is not in your current classroom seating, please contact ssd@binghamton.edu and arrangements will be made.

Closed captioning required for all audio/video material for class; SSD will be contacting you about captioning

Any course material that includes audio will need to include closed captioning. SSD staff can ensure your materials are captioned, but advance access to these materials is necessary as adding captioning takes time. Engage with the SSD staff member who contacts you about captioning in order to create captioned content.

Computer/tablet to take notes during class

The student takes notes using their personal laptop or tablet and needs to be permitted to bring the device to class.

Student may use an assistive technology device in class, instructor does not have to do anything further to implement

The student will bring their own assistive technology device, which may include a tablet, laptop, phone app or recording device.

Class material accommodation

Course material outside of textbooks must be in an accessible format void of highlights, cross-outs or handwritten information

If you provide students with materials via email, paper, Brightspace or other learning management system, the material needs to be in an accessible format which does not include other markings such as handwritten notes, highlighting, etc. If you would like guidance on how to ensure your materials are accessible, email ssd@binghamton.edu for assistance.

Assignment accommodation

The student may occasionally require an extension on an assignment; contact SSD if you have any questions

The student is expected to discuss this accommodation with you and determine a plan for contacting you when an extension is needed. The student may also request an SSD staff member work with you to determine a plan on their behalf. Generally, an extension of 24-48 hours is recommended. SSD recognizes there may be assignments that cannot be extended and is happy to assist if questions arise.

Attendance accommodation

Student is approved for 2 absences in addition to your course policy; if this fundamentally alters your course, contact SSD

The student is expected to discuss this accommodation with you to determine a plan for communicating with you when they are absent due to a disability-related need. They may also request an SSD staff member discuss the accommodation with you on their behalf. This accommodation applies only to disability-related needs. SSD recognizes there are some courses where additional absences may fundamentally alter the course and asks that instructors contact SSD staff if questions arise.

Test accommodation

Extended time (1.5x or 2.0x)

The student requires extended time on any timed quiz or exam in the course. If the course includes other timed assessments and students request extended time, instructors should refer the student to SSD to discuss the request. SSD will follow up with the instructor as appropriate to determine if extended time is reasonable for the activity.
